There are homes all over Los Angeles with all shapes, styles, and prices. Everyone has different tastes and preferences. Gates are one of them. Take one of our listings for example (yes, this is a shameless plug, I regret nothing). It is our estate listing of 4352 Forman Avenue in Toluca Lake (pictured below).
As of lately, having gates is becoming a bigger deal. And this isn’t because celebrities just want it for privacy or creating a private oasis, but rather for security. Many have been broken into (Rihanna twice this year, LA Dodger Yasiel Puig four times, and many more). According to NeighborhoodScout.com, Los Angeles is only safer than 16% of U.S. Cities.
There are sources to see how safe a neighborhood is. One is CrimeMapping.com. You can type in a specific address and see what crime has been going on in the area. The other is the Los Angeles Times Crime Map. This gives you an overview of neighborhood crime and ranks it in comparison to other neighborhoods within the City.
And even with this information, safety is subjective. We have clients that are surprised to see the amount of crime that happens in their neighborhood, but never knew. All information needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But without question, with a gated street or property, it can help significantly as a crime deterrent.
So, do those gates have value? The answer is a resounding yes. Even though the City only allows a five-foot-high wall to go around your property, it can still provide a brief deterrent for some criminals. And if there are multiple homes to break into in a neighborhood, they will most likely go for the easier targets.
