Looking to buy? Chances are you are going to use a real estate agent to assist in the hunt. However, more and more buyers are unclear on their agent’s role and may not be utilizing their agent to their full advantage. Below are four basic tips on how to maximize your success when working with a real estate agent:
- Get your finances in order, understand what you want and make sure that it is doable. This includes your timeframe, price, and specifications of the home. Being prepared and “pre-approved” by a direct lender will allow your agent to focus in on what you want, which can save you time and money in the long run. And don’t forget to give your agent everything he or she needs ahead of time so that you can act quickly if you want to write an offer.
- Let your agent know your expectations: Make sure your agent is giving you updates as you want them. This could be weekly or even daily, by phone text or email. This way you know your agent is aware of what you want and need.
- Be on time. Agents set appointments to show you properties. If you are late meeting your agent , you run the risk of the listing agent for a property not waiting much longer.
- And just as a reward, refer your agent to your friends, family, and co-workers: Show your agent some love and refer them business. This is their livelihood and referrals are the best way to stay in business. If they did an outstanding job, spread the word! And don’t worry about referring them while you hunt, most agents can handle more than one client.
When working with an agent to buy a home, don’t look at it as they are working for you, but rather working WITH you. This is a team effort to find you the best home out there.
